Our Advocacy Officer, Haja Sorie Conteh, is on a school safeguarding tour in Makeni.

On Monday, 10th October 2026, MADAM Sierra Leone’s Advocacy Officer, Haja Sorie Conteh, visited Rogbaneh Government Municipal School (Girls’ Secondary School) to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding in schools and the critical role teachers play in protecting Girls.

Speaking on the importance of safeguarding, Haja Sorie Conteh emphasised that safeguarding goes beyond having policies on paper. It is a shared responsibility to protect children from abuse, exploitation, neglect, bullying, and all forms of harm, whether at school, on the way to and from school, or at home. She stressed that Girls who feel unsafe may struggle to learn and participate fully in school activities.

She further highlighted the importance of protecting girls to ensure they remain in school, pursue their educational aspirations, and reach their full potential.

Haja Conteh described teachers as the first line of protection for children within the school environment. Given the amount of time they spend with learners, teachers are often well positioned to notice changes in a child’s behaviour, attendance, academic performance, or mood that may indicate a safeguarding concern.

She encouraged teachers and school administrators to remain vigilant, listen to children, take their concerns seriously, and respond appropriately whenever a child’s safety or well-being is at risk.

Addressing the pupils directly, Haja Conteh encouraged them to know their rights and understand that abuse is never their fault. She urged them to speak to a trusted teacher, parent, or guardian whenever they experience or witness something that makes them feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or afraid.

She also encouraged the girls to support one another, speak up against harmful behaviour, and report any incidents that threaten their safety.
